Under Section 2 of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 employers are required to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all its employees with particular reference to:

  • Safe plant and systems of work.
  • A safe working environment.
  • The provision of any necessary information, instruction, training and supervision.
  • A safe place of work with safe means of access and egress.
  • The safe use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances.
An employer with five or more employees must also:
  • Prepare a written health and safety policy statement.
  • Identify the organisational arrangements for implementing the policy.
  • Revise and update the health and safety policy as necessary in line with new legislation, organisational changes and other external or internal factors.
If you are a small business of five employees or more and answer 'No' to any of the questions below you may be placing your staff and your business at risk. 
  1. Do you know what your Health and Safety responsibilities are?
  2. Does your company have an up to date Health and Safety policy?
  3. Have you identified all tasks and operations in your business that require a written risk assessment?
  4. Are all risk assessments in place, current and briefed out to staff?

  6. Have you got up to date and signed records of your staff Health and Safety training?
  7. Have you identified all business activities requiring Health Surveillance?
  8. Are all portable electrical appliances in your workplace tested and maintained regularly?
  9. Have you carried out a Fire Risk assessment on your business premises in the last 12 months?
  10. If your staff use Visual Display Screens are any of your staff designated as 'users' under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992?

For small business of approximately 5 or more employees we can help to put in place 'health and safety essentials'. Including preparation of a health and safety policy, carrying out of risk assessments (including DSE), fire safety training etc.

Another common use for our services would be to act as 'Competent Advisors'. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, all organisations must appoint a Competent Person to advise on health & safety matters. This can be an internal function or external consultant. SEE Improvements can fulfill the role of Competent Person within your organisation and be named in your health & safety policy. We can then act to ensure that your company health & safety function is maintained to comply fully with current legislation.
